Performance Divisions
Elite High School Division
A new division has been created to specifically accommodate high school teams that have a special dance group within the team. This enables elite dance groups to compete within a category of their own! All High School Elite teams will be in competition with one another regardless of school or team size.

Elite performances will be recognized both by category as well as overall:

  • Groups will be rewarded within the style of dance and can receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze plaque for their performance (ie: Gold Star Award in Elite Jazz).
  • In addition, the top three overall scores by Elite performances at contest will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze trophy (ie: Starmakers Elite – Best In Class Gold).  This ranking is based on the average of scores from all Elite performances.

Elite Guidelines:

  1. HS Elite team members may also compete with their regular school team.
  2. The entry fees will be the same as other team performances.
  3. Elite teams may not be entirely composed of officers, but may include officers as part of the Elite team.
  4. All other items in the team routine guidelines will also apply

Solo Division
Solo performances should be no longer than 2 minutes in length with a 15 second grace period. Finalists will be selected and each finalist will perform their routine again for an additional judges’ panel. The winner of the solo competition will receive a trophy; finalists will receive medallions.

Officer Division
An officer line may enter as many as 10 or as few as 1 performance. Officer performances must be completely separate from the team entry; material may not be duplicated.

Ensemble Division
Duets: 2 performers
Trios: 3 performers
Small Ensemble: 4-9 performers
Large Ensemble: 10+ performers

Your team may enter as many ensembles as desired. Routines from team and officer divisions may not be duplicated.
IMPORTANT: If an individual has entered more than one ensemble, please indicate the overlap to avoid a conflict in scheduling. In most cases, ensembles from a school will perform consecutively.

Team Division
Your team may enter as many as 11 or as few as 1 performance.

*NOTE: In an effort to promote the use of appropriate music, dance movements, and costuming in the dance/drill team world, Starmakers Dance and Performance Camps will support its judges in the deduction of points in the props of choreography and appearance if needed.

The National Council of Dance which includes: American Dance/Drill Team, MA Dance, Showtime International, Starmakers, Showmakers, unanimously voted to institute the following rules beginning in the 2006-07 Competition Season:
  1. Team Size Rule: Varsity Public High School Dance Teams classified by team size (Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large), must determine their size by reporting the actual number of members on their team and not how many members will be competing at the competition. Contest administrators may elect to further divide some of these team categories that have a large number of participants. Changes in team size must be made in writing three weeks before the contest and signed by your administrator. No changes in team size will be made after the schedule is sent out.

  2. Routine Performance Requirement: Varsity Public High School Dance Teams must perform a minimum of 70% of their actual team membership on all team routine events entered. Any team that elects to perform less than 70% will be placed in the Elite category.

  3. Props and Backdrops Usage: Curtains, staging, and other props for routines should be constructed to fit through a 7 foot tall double door, with the center support bar removed, found at most public school gymnasiums where regional contests are held. Props and staging may have minor assembly on the floor but setup and breakdown time for props and staging will be added to the actual routine performance time length to produce total floor time. Total floor time should not exceed 5 minutes for all dance categories except show production (10 minutes). Any exceptions must be approved by the contest administrator, in advance of the competition.

  4. Performance Schedule: A 5 point penalty will be assessed to teams not ready to perform when scheduled unless the delay is caused by a technical problem in the competition. This will be determined by the officials conducting the competition. If the competition is running ahead of schedule, teams will have the option of performing early or waiting until their scheduled time but no later.

  5. Late Entry Penalties: Any entries received after the registration deadline (10 days prior to the contest date) will be charged a $25 late fee for each team, officer, ensemble, and solo routine entered.

  6. Late cancellations: Any team that drops events after the schedule has been made will still be responsible for those entry fees unless cancellations have been approved by the contest administrator.
